The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. It designates the first Thursday in May as a day of national prayer.
This year’s theme Love One Another is based upon John 13:34, where Jesus Christ says, “Love one another, as I have loved you….”
Last year, there were more than 50,000 prayer observances estimated to have occurred. In addition, the Day of Prayer trended #1 nationwide on Twitter throughout the day.
The National Observance in Washington, D.C. was broadcast in 200 countries of the world and 1.5 billion homes. The video recording of the observance had more than one million views on Facebook from 38 countries around the world.
